Progress (!)

PROGRESS!

Big E got the upper cabinets up and he got the base cabinet against the wall (an accomplishment due to presence of plumbing for sink, fridge, dishwasher and power for dishwasher and extra outlet for microwave shelf).

The range hood is a work in progress. We have to build a frame to mount it into. Turns out it's more for a cooktop configuration - but we're making it work with the slide in range. Its either this way or have no hood at all (or some huge ceiling mount monstrosity that will chew up all the open space we've created). But we have that on the run and E is going to start building tomorrow.

(don't mind the crap - you try cleaning with all this destruction!)

Progress (?)

Here we are Memorial Day weekend - at home, slaving away. Actually all the trains were booked to Galesburg and we had plans with friends in town today - so no joy for visits downstate. (Sorry y'all - we'll come down as soon as we can). But this week we did get the rail up to hold up the cabinets and last weekend we bought all the drywall to build the closet. (Ladies, if you need to kill your husband have him carry double sheets of drywall alone!) But thanks to some Home Depot guys and some neighbors who've all been there, done that - we managed to get the 8 sheets of drywall in the elevator and into the condo. We WILL HAVE the rest of the cabinets together by end of day Monday and the stove WILL BE hooked up with the exhaust fan shortly thereafter, if not by Monday night. That way I can get some granite guys here and get the countertops installed as soon as possible.

In other news my new job is going well and I think everyone is really happy with me there at the moment, and I'm happy there. So it's a win win. And with this new stable financial environment we can actually afford the work we're doing on the condo. Wow, how wierd is that?

Any-hoo that's the news of the moment and look for an update on Monday night!

Not strictly kitchen news...

Well this week has been eventful! I got the cabinet door fronts ordered and they are expected to ship on May 31st. So hopefully that next weekend we'll be able to install them. The installation will be quick - it's just those cover panels that stop the whole works for the moment. I asked Scherr's if they could ship those sooner, that way I can get my countertops ordered. Wow having a sink and countertops - what a luxury!

So onward to un-kitchen news. I got a j-o-b this week! One of my clients had a need for a Production Manager and they asked me to join the team. I'll be in charge of the computers and associated systems, managing workflow as it goes out for printing and whatnot, design and layout as needed and I'll even be the manager of one other person and the freelance fleet (kind of ironic, huh?). I officially start on Monday at Topin & Associates. I've worked here as freelance for the last 3 years, in fact they were my very first freelance client. Erich is exstatic, he's been wanting me to get a job for a while now. And financially this will really help us plan better, having a consistent income instead of my hot and cold freelance income. So I think it's a win win.

No more lock-nuts!

Well, we spent all day Sunday assembling cabinets! Boy, how "fun"! But we have all the cabinet boxes assembled and we only have to put the drawers in 2 cabinets and the cover panels on the rest of the island. So I think we're in good shape. I'm getting the doors ordered today and then next weekend we're gonna get the upper cabinets hung and hopefully figure out how to get the plumbing into the sink cabinet without destroying the entire back of the cabinet (yeah, wish us luck on that one!) Here's some pictures of the progress!

We're back!

Erich's dream came true - a picture is really worth 1,000 words! This is Buddy from Roatan, Honduras and no we did not bring him home!

We're back from vacation. I was hoping the kitchen elves would have finished all this work, but alas, it's exactly how I left it!

The sample door from Scherr's arrived today. I think I love it! Here are a couple photos. It's Alder veneer on MDF with a Chestnut stain. Let me know if you likey, likey. :)
